We built the tornado shelter we couldn’t find for our family

FamilySAFE came about the way a lot of good ideas do: out of plain old common sense. We’d seen too many underground shelters that were hard to reach – steep steps, heavy hatches, cars parked overhead, and air that turned damp or filled with exhaust fumes. For older folks, kids, or anyone with limited mobility, that’s hard to manage when the sirens start. We wanted something better. So we built it: above-ground, solid steel shelters that are proven to stand against any storm.

System 1, Inc began their relationship with FamilySAFE in 2009.

Robert Rayl the CEO and President of System 1 Facility Services and Construction was looking for an answer to insure the safety of his family during severe weather. Being a native of Central Kansas and currently residing the past 25 years in Republic, Missouri, Robert fully understood the need for a Storm Shelter.

While building a home he researched various options and various storm shelter companies. After his research Robert felt FamilySAFE was the hands down choice for his family. FamilySAFE had the quality, the experience, the expertise and no doubt had completed adequate testing prior to going to market.

Just a few years after owning a FamilySAFE, Robert was looking for ways to expand the System 1 business in Missouri and other surrounding States. Due to his belief in the FamilySAFE product, his resources to manage the business, as well as the obvious need for others in the area, he reached out to FamilySAFE to see if there would be an opportunity to perhaps become a distributor of the FamilySAFE product.

The rest is History. The companies came together to bring “Peace of Mind” to thousands of families across Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas.

Pioneers in above-ground storm shelters

Back in 1998, we partnered with Texas Tech University to design and engineer the first above-ground steel storm shelter of its kind. More than 30,000 installations later, our shelters have stood through 16 historic tornadoes without a single failure, or a single complaint to the BBB. As founding members of the NSSA and ATSA, we helped shape the very codes and standards that still define storm-tested safety today. We’ve seen what storms can do, and we want more families to feel that peace of mind whenever bad weather rolls in.

Yes. Every FamilySAFE storm shelter meets or exceeds FEMA and ICC-500 standards for above-ground storm protection. Each unit is fully engineered, complete with stamped drawings and verified testing through Texas Tech University.

Most homeowners choose a garage, but our shelters can be installed almost anywhere there’s a solid concrete slab, as long as it meets FEMA specifications. If you’re not sure about the best spot, we’ll take a look at your space and recommend what works best.

No. If lightning strikes your shelter, the electricity travels safely down the outside walls and into the ground through the anchoring system; it never enters the interior. It works on the same scientific principle that protects people sitting in a car during a storm, called the Faraday Principle.
